All or Nothing Tattoo Studio in Atlanta Georgia has been a household name in tattooing for many years. Commonly known to be one of the best tattoo parlors in the world and servicing slews of celebrities, musicians and athletes. The studio is high-octane, high output, brash and intense just like their artwork. The lists of artists who have tattooed under their roof is a veritable who's who list compiled of almost all the big names in tattooing. Most of today's up-and-coming artists got their start or were in some way related to this conveyor belt of success developed by the infamous Brandon Bond.
The artists that are birthed in this intense environment have a very distinctive style, very bold, and very masculine. A sausage fest of artistic dominance and testosterone. "We had a female resident artist once and didn't like it because women attract bears and sharks with their menstruation", explains Brandon Bond who is never shy about his thoughts. "Tattooing is a boy sport, there's no crying in tattooing just like baseball".
However it seems that times are changing in this premier southeastern studio with a massive dose of baby -itis and a steaming side dish of female tattoo artists!
Throughout the course of All or Nothing's illustrious history many babies have been born, the first being Dave Tedder's (manager and longest resident artist) daughter, Delia Sadie Tedder who is now almost 6 years old.
"Anytime a baby is born into our family it is a cause for celebration. We all gather at the hospital after the close of business hours and sneak into the hospital in pairs from different directions. All of us converging on one room filling it to capacity and beyond" explains Brandon. "It has always been a highlight in our lives and brings everyone so much closer together. I can't even imagine what THIS event is going to be like for all of us". And by "this event", Mr Bond, the father of this huge tattoo family, is referring to the birth of his own baby, a boy, due September 2012, his first child.
"I'm still in shock I can't believe it! Its absolutely the best news ever, plus her boobs already got bigger!" Brandon exclaims when asked about his new addition. A boy, whose genetic makeup is soley defined by two tattoo artists that will be embraced by a huge family of creative, motivated and talented people has to be an artist right? When asked Brandon responds with "Tattooing is the best thing that ever happened in my life to this point. I am extremely grateful for everything that tattooing has given me, but it is a difficult way to make a living. I would never force this life on anyone. But if he wants to learn to tattoo he's going to. His mama is an amazing artist in her own right and she will be returning to tattooing after the baby is born so the baby will be absolutely surrounded with tattoo art. The nursery is going to be a collection of tattoo artists painting Star Wars based works and the invitation to contribute art is open to anyone who wants to paint something".
"The most recent baby was Nicole's, and that experience was a very good one for all of us" Brandon says. Many people might be surprised to find out that this testosterone tattoo family is actually spearheaded by Nicole Webster, who works alongside Shauna Smith (yes another female!) Nicole has been "mom" to the All or Nothing family for five years now and is a mother of five children herself. She is currently working on a book entitled "A Non Ordinary Housewife's guide to feeding your family in a Post Apocalyptic world". Brandon actually gave her away at her wedding as he assumes the role of "best man" as well for many of the artist's weddings and family functions.
Although well known to be an artist staff comprised solely of men, the boys of All or Nothing have recently taken in several female artist family members. Hell may have indeed frozen over. Even Dave and Brandon have taken in two female tattooers into their homes. Dave has shacked up with Heidi Beers of Olde school tattoo in Atlanta, and Brandon's new baby lives in Clare Jordan, a tattoo artist formerly of Nautilus tattoo in CT but now queen of the All or Nothing Family. The studio recently added a female apprentice to the roster for the first time in years.
"I don't know how we got the reputation of being sexist, we have had females involved from the beginning, it seems that our male artists get a lot of attention though and that might have overshadowed the female success. After all it's a male dominated industry, one of the few left" Brandon explains.
"Our tattoo studio is a family that extends all the way from our awesome clients and throughout the 80 or so people that help us with things like stickers, websites, and promotions. We are an evergrowing army of folks kinda like 'Project Mayhem in Fight Club' except with chicks and babies and whatnot" Brandon explains.
And while the artwork has traditionally been very masculine, the studio has turned out a huge number of tattooed female models that can be seen on the covers of magazines worldwide on an almost monthly basis. "I think 36 covers was the last count" Brandon recalls. "But it seems we are about to start turning out a lot more chick tattoos!"
The studio is having a huge party this summer to celebrate the release of "All or Nothing: The American Dream" a documentary exploring this talented clan. Check out www.AllOrNothingTattoo.com for details.
"We not I" has been the mantra of All or Nothing since day one. It appears that this family is growing even more rapidly than usual! Congratulations to Brandon and Clare and the entire All or Nothing family. Even though Brandon claims he won't force tattooing on his son, the boy may indeed be a game changer waiting to happen for us in tattooing.
