Art School? - Page 2

well just take in what you want and leave the rest. remember that succesful artists become succesful artists, and the rest teach.

this isnt always true, but good to remember if you are worried about being too infuenced by the "art school".

i would have told him that i'm the one paying for the course and i'll use whatever words describe my feelings, like it or not. if a piece of art leave me with a feeling of awe, then awesome is the correct choice of words.

as far as being shaped into something your not, simply tell him to piss off. but be polite about it. art is subjective and what you like others may hate and so on, so forth. my friend erin draws her art like a 5th grader on porpose, she has sold an amazing amount of art to corporate and personal collectors as well as a good amount being sold to record labels for album art.

when i was in school i drew lots of macbre imagery, dead people, skulls, decapated heads, that sort of thing and my teacher hated it. he told me i would never get a real job that pays the bills if i kept drawing that garbage. now i'm proud to say i do pay my bills drawing all the stuff he hated. not to mention i make more than he does.

i refused to be hearded, there are sheep and there are wolves. i'd rather be neither. i make my own way through this world and screw whatever the haters think. my bills are paid and my family is happy and healthy. i'd call that being successful.

I'm not a "seasoned professional", but figured I'd respond anyway. I work professionally in a shop, but I am fairly new to tattooing.

I have a pretty serious formal art background. As a child I wanted to "be an illustrator" when I grew up. I've been drawing since I could hold a crayon, I took 14 art courses while in high school, fine arts seal on my diploma, had work hanging at congressional art shows, attended 2 different art schools for illustration and graphic design, I've worked as an illustrator, graphic designer, portrait artist, landscape artist and art tutor.

I feel that having a formal art background has helped me dramatically as I have have progressed with tattooing. There is no way I would be where I am now tattooing without it. It would have taken much, much longer.

Tattooing IS art, so I believe more art education can only improve my work. It's been more than 10 years since I was in college, but I still study classic art works, along with studying tattooing.

that'll be that attitude that will make you better, if you give up and become lazy your art stays in an even keel, Discipline is going to make you better and art school will lay a basic foundation to this, but paper is so different than skin as you know

UPDATE: Sad to say that I lost my job at the tattoo shop I was working at (not for bad work ethic). The main suggestion to me was to possibly go back to another apprenticeship. Im working on my art to add to my portfolio now. Hope to update with some better news soon. Hope everyone is doing well and not too poorly affected by this recession.

Did you ask for a unpaid position, cause i know my apprenticeship was, or did you talk back/ you didn't jive with your mentor ect

im just confused how you get fired from an unpaid position or were you just working the counter and learning a little bit here and there

I was hired specifically as the 'small stuff' tattoo artist (Lettering, tiny flash, etc.). I had two incidences that I'm not really sure what happened with the healing process. All the other customers that came back healed fine. However it was made apparent to me that I need to go back to an apprenticeship again to re-learn what it is that is causing these things to happen; that is why I was let go/fired/etc.

I am very nice to my co-workers and got along with everyone. I'm pretty easy going working in that environment, and I have always been a hard worker. I am drug and drama free.
