Re: Heavenly Bound Tattoo in Helen GA?
Does he have ANY way for you to look at his work? Before you move and commit yourself into slavery, i mean apprenticeship, you definitely want to make sure the artist you are learning under is worth it.
Is there a fee associated with it? How tough will it be to move down to GA, especially small mountain town Georgia? What will they require of you once you are there?
I am not familiar with the shop, but I am fairly familiar with Helen. There are some tattoo shops up there, mostly street shops that do the most business during Octoberfest on drunken party goers. The town is super quiet the rest of the year. Really really pretty, but quiet. I'm not saying there arent good artists there, just to check him out first...
Are they on Inkednation? tattooartists.org? even yellowpages.com with some reviews posted? If he can email you about apprenticeship, but hasnt utilized the interweb thingy to promote himself on ANY site, than you know you will not be learning how to promote yourself, which is almost as important as the tattooing well. You can be the best artist in the world, but that don't mean s&!t if no one has ever heard of you.
If he doesn't have any way for you to look at his work, I would keep looking elsewhere....
Some other things to think about: Has he gone through blood borne pathogen training? Where did HE apprentice or learn his trade? How long has he been tattooing? Has he been published anywhere recently? Make a list of questions for the guy. It might make him think you are a pain in the ass and not want ya anymore, BUT if he is worth a damn he will see it as you being smart about your future.
apprenticeship is f@#king hard, even for someone like me who got in at All or Nothing. I couldn't imagine going through this without amazing artists to learn from to make it all worthwhile. I'm proud of my shop. Make sure you apprentice somewhere you can be proud of as well.
