i like to build a frame out of 2x4's, then face it with a sheet of masonite, then stretch canvas over that and gesso it. I like the texture you get from working on canvas but i don't like the give - i want a hard surface. this gives me the best of both worlds. aside from the nice surface you get to work on, it gives you a real good-looking finished piece. this piece is about 4 1/2" deep, with canvas stretched all the way 'round and stapled inside. the edges are painted too. no framing necessary.
