Re: Apprentice Help - Outlining Practise
local scratcher asked me today to apprentice him, here's what i responded.
we currently have an apprentice at the moment. ok, as far as working from your house is concerned, this is something that us professional tattoo artists are very against. i do realize that we all have to start somewhere, but your home is not the right place. first, stop tattooing. build yourself a strong artistic portfolio with drawings of tattoos. lots of them, draw draw draw. then go to every clean and reputable tattoo shop you can find showing them your portfolio. you will be told "NO" by almost everyone. do not let this discourage you. if there is a paticular artist you like and would like to learn from, get tattooed by him. hang around the shop everyday, bring coffee or lunch, ask if you can clean something or help out in anyway. be dedicated and show them you are honest about wanting to make this a career. tattooing is not a hobby and it offends a professional when it gets treated that way. tattooing is my entire life and it's how i provide for my family. it's not just a job. it is not easy to do and finding an apprenticeship will not be easy either. right now there are a million kids who want to do it and going at it at home. that is what is giving tattooing a bad name and there is nothing honorable about doing it the wrong way, some one could get sick or hurt by not learning the right way. please stop tattooing and if you are sincere about wanting this, do it by the book. i hope this advice will help you and the art of tattooing. the world does not need another scratcher, but does need talented artists who are knowlegeable in professional in the field. good luck, i hope this helps.

Yep, that's perfect. You weren't an ass, and you weren't sugar coating it.
