Power Supply Voltage for Pilot Machines

I have the original Spaulding & Rogers Luchbox Power Supply. After upgrading my machines I have to keep the power level as low as it goes to keep the machines running correctly. If I increase the gapping, it slows things down, but I'm not sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing? Long story short, I'm wondering if I need a newer power supply or if it's OK to have a larger gap (2 nickels thick) to slow the machines down to work properely with my power supply?

I forgot to mention that I'm mostly using the Deluxe Soba Pilot Machines. My liner has 6 wrap coils and my shader has 8 wraps...
